Entitlement

Where did I get the idea that I should feel
        That I am entitled to things?
That I should have gold, when was I told
        That I should have golden rings?

For now I have found that this world abounds
        With feelings of entitlement,
So that folks should receive (or so they believe)
        While living in "idlement".

I think that I have found within a historic bound
        Where entitlement is first mentioned.
For someone did write of an inalienable right
        But that was not the author’s intention.

Yet people believe that they will receive,
        Or at least that is how it should be,
If one does what is right both by day and by night
        Only happiness he should ever see.

So when bad things start it strikes to the heart
        And anger will arise, I am sure.
For God who is fair, Who truly does care
        Wants for us all to be pure.

Yet God does not pay on every Friday,
        Nor at the end of the year.
But He will do right after earth’s dark night
        When before our God we appear.

So when you have done well, with assurance I can tell
        That right now it is patience you need.
For God’s reward you will find, since He has you in
mind,
        And will be given to you if you heed.

This thought that I now pen, to be read among men,
        Is that the victory is for those at the finish line
Yet it takes more than nerve to know what we deserve
        NOTHING for we are "unprofitable" we will find.

Luke 17:10  So likewise ye, when ye shall have done
all those things which were commanded you, say, "We
are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was
our duty to do."
